Pope Leo XIV: How much does the pope get paid?
Pope Leo XIV made history by becoming the first American to lead the Catholic Church. His election has sparked the curiosity of many, who wonder about various papal aspects, including how much they are paid.
Do popes receive a salary?
The Vatican does not disclose how much clergymen are paid. However, according to The Catholic Talk Show, cardinals receive a monthly stipend equaling about $5,600; and popes are entitled to about $2,814 monthly.
The last three popes — Francis, Benedict XVI, and Jonh Paul II — all gave up their salaries.
The Vatican covers the pope's expenses, including meals, transportation, security and medical expenses. Popes are also provided with an official residence, the Apostolic Palace.
It’s not known if Pope Leo XIV will give up his salary like his predecessors did.
