Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) say at least 131 suspected deaths and more than 500 suspected cases have been reported in an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the country, according to AFP and Reuters.

Public Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba cautioned that investigations are still underway to confirm how many of the deaths are directly linked to the virus.

Officials say the outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, a rare variant of Ebola for which there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments, according to AFP.

The World Health Organization’s director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said he is deeply concerned about the scale and speed of the epidemic and that the UN health agency will convene its emergency committee on Tuesday to advise on recommendations.
