Night Club Collapses, than 218 people have died and over 200 more were injured.

Following the collapse of a ceiling at a popular nightclub in the Dominican Republic, the death toll continues to climb.

On the evening of 8th April, around 400 people were at the Jet Set Lounge in the San Domingo area where the ceiling of the club collapsed during a performance by Rubby Perez at around 1am local time. Authorities have tirelessly worked through the rubble to help those beneath, however, more than 218 people have died and over 200 more were injured. “The past two days have been difficult because when people are trapped, you’re not feeling well mentally,” one responder told CNN.

Officials have said that it’s too early to understand why the roof fell. Relatives of the victims have been waiting at the nation’s forensics institute as the team worked to identify victims, while others went from one hospital to the next to look for their loved ones with some seen clutching to photographs. Many of those injured were in critical or serious condition with broken bones. A member of the Dominican Civil Protection Service, Daniel Heredia, said that people on site could “hear people who are trapped, screaming for help – it’s a bit difficult”.

A series of videos and photos circulating on social media show the instant in which the ceiling collapsed and what the club looks in the aftermath of the incident.
