CAF slams heavy sanctions on Morocco and Senegal, following misconduct during AFCON
(Ball boys towel saga, disruption of match amongst other unsporting conduct)
The Confedération of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has imposed a series of significant sanctions on the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), as well as several players and officials, following incidents that occurred during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final.
Sanctions against Senegal 🇸🇳
👉 CAF has suspended Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw for five official CAF matches for unsporting conduct. CAF ruled that his behaviour vi0lated the principles of fair play and integrity and brought the game into disrepute. He has been fined USD 100,000.
👉Two Senegalese players were also sanctioned for misconduct towards match officials. Iliman Cheikh Baroy Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr were each suspended for two official CAF matches.
The Fédération Sénégalaise de Football was further fined USD 300,000 for the improper conduct of its supporters, which CAF said brought the game into disrepute.
The federation was also fined an additional USD 300,000 for the unsporting conduct of its players and technical staff, in vi0lation of the principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity.
In addition, the FSF was fined USD 15,000 for team misconduct after five Senegalese players received cautions during the final.
Sanctions against Morocco 🇲🇦
👉CAF imposed disciplinary measures on the host nation.
Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi was sus•pended for two official CAF matches, with one of those matches sus•pended for a probationary period of one year, for unsporting behaviour.
👉Midfielder Ismaël Saibari received a three match sus•pension for unsporting conduct and was also fined USD 100,000.
👉The Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football was fined USD 200,000 for the inappropriate behaviour of stadium ball boys during the final.
👉The FRMF was also fined USD 100,000 for the improper conduct of its players and technical staff, who invaded the VAR review area and obstructed the referee’s work, in violation of Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
👉In addition, the Moroccan federation was fined USD 15,000 for the use of lasers by its supporters during the match.
